Strengthening Family

A family is a group of people, all of whom have their own needs and have different ways of thinking, expressing feelings, and behaving, based on their own assumptions and choices. Every member of a family plays an important part, doing the tasks that need to be done and trying to get along with one another.

Sometimes family members get along easily and well with one another, and sometimes they get along with more difficulty. There are choices that can be made to help families get along better. One of these choices is to take everyone’s needs in the family under consideration, rather than focusing only on personal needs.

This lesson continues building relationship skills by examining assumptions and choices made about a person’s family. Activity 1 is the construction of a web to explore the nature of being a child in a family. Activity 2 consists of a guided fantasy designed to sensitize students to the needs and feelings of their parents. Activity 3 builds awareness of students’ behavior as a family member. Activity 4 explores the assumption “My family must only meet my needs” through a series of scenes.

Additional ways to promote positive family choices are sharing personal experiences and discussing students’ choices as they come up. Also, students can be helped to take their peer’s needs under consideration when interacting with them.
